Shout Out: Modern Luxury Riviera San Diego

Trip Report: San Diego Reader - Part II

As I have noted before, craft beer is emerging as an important part of Valle de Guadalupe's culinary scene.  In part II of Brandon Hernandez's trip report he details some of the progress Baja brewers have made bringing craft beer to the Valle.

ChuckAlek Independent Brewers Visit Valle de Guadalupe

Located in Ramona California ChuckAlek Independent Brewers is a family run operation with brewer/owner Grant Fraley at the helm.  They posted a picture on Instagram of Vena Cava and its Foodtruck Troika with an interesting hashtag -  #bajabeerproject2015.

I reached out for a little clarification and received the following reponse:

"Hammering out details now, but we're talking with Baja breweries, chefs, wineries and a hop farm to bring a collaborative project over the course of 2015!"

Sounds like a winning combination,

La Esperanza to Open October 16

Chef Miguel Angel Guerrero (La Querencia, El Colegio, El Taller) is a powerhouse in the world of Baja cuisine. It was a very big deal when the news broke early this year that he would be returning to Valle de Guadalupe with a new restaurant on the LA Cetto property.

Months ago there were mentions on his Instagram feed that the restaurant, La Esperanza, might be open as early as April.  When I checked the calendar this morning and noticed it was now September I started wondering what was happening with La Esperanza, so I reached out to Chef via Twitter and asked.

His response - October 16.

Event Alert: Taco A Las Brasas at Legado Sais Winery

Bringing in Tacos Kokopelli (who are absolutely killing it in Tijuana) for this event is a very very good idea.

Can I put in an order for a kraken taco right now?

Lately I have been paying closer attention to Valle de Guadalupe's emerging craft beer scene, and hearing about brewers using locally sourced hops.  That sounded a bit strange as the Valle doesn't exactly have a climate well suited for growing lupulo.

La Ruta VCC's picture above pointed me towards Rancho Loza, and with a couple clicks I learned they're indeed growing hops in Baja's wine country.

Mujeres Catadores de Cerveza en Mexico posted a trip report to Rancho Loza here:

New Restaurant Alert: El Apple Pie Cafe

I am not exactly sure why, but apple pie is kind of a big deal in Valle de Guadalupe.  Several of the restaurants that primarily serve residents feature it on their menus.  And soon, the Valle will have a place dedicated to la manzana.

Opening September 27

Ensenada Toll Road Opening Postponed Until December

April 2014

This is not really much of a surprise. If the road does open in December it would still be remarkable achievement to get it open a year after the collapse.

The cross pollination of food, wine, and beer culture between Baja and the San Diego area is a big bowl of awesome.  Chef Flor Franco (Convivia and Resguardo in Valle de Guadalupe) is continuing the trend with a new restaurant, Zarco, in Chula Vista.

Rumor has it that Zarco will be open to the public on September 16.
